私はよく日本各地を旅していた。あてもなく歩きまわることが好きだった。
その土地の風を感じ、自分にとっての新しい風景を目にできたことが純粋に嬉しかった。

それらの旅の中でいつも出会うものがあった。
信楽焼でできた狸の置物だ。
それまでほとんど気に留めていなかった狸の置物だったが、そのことに気がついてからは意識せざるを得なくなった。
店先に置かれる一般的によく知られている狸の置物以外にも、様々な形や大きさや色があることを知った。
今や日本人にとっては当たり前となっている狸のいる風景を改めて考えてみると、非常に奇妙であり、そして愛おしくもある。

これはどこまで広がっているのだろう。
狸をめぐる旅はまだまだ始まったばかりだ。


Nippon Dochu Shigarakitanuki

I used to travel to various places around Japan. I liked walking aimlessly, without a destination in mind.
I felt pure happiness in feeling the wind of each place and being able to see new sights.

There was something that I always encountered on my travels.
It was a Shigaraki ware ceramic tanuki statue.
Up until then, I had never paid much attention to the tanuki statues, but once I noticed it, I couldn’t stop seeing them.
Aside from the common statue placed outside of Japanese shops, I learned that they came in many different shapes, sizes and colors.
Now, when I recall the scenes with those tanuki that Japanese people take for granted, they are both incredibly strange and dear to me.

I wonder how far they extend to.
My travels in search of tanuki have only just begun.
